Briefcase on the Kitchen Table

The musings of a millenial midwestern lawyer and mom.

The Lawyer and the Astrophysicist

So I think if I ever decide to rename my blog, this is what it will be called. While I am not actually a lawyer yet and Avery is still working on his PhD, during the summer when we are both working (instead of going to class) in our respective fields, I feel like I get a little taste of what “normal life” will feel like for each of post-grad school.

We are an odd pair. To say that our fields of study have next to nothing to do with each other is putting it mildly. I deal on a micro-level, one person at a time. Avery deals on a macro level so large that my brain doesn’t even like to think about it (it freaks me out). Avery looks at stars billions of light years away and galaxy CLUSTERS in which our little planet is nothing but a speck on a speck on a speck.

With this being said, I do like the diversity our conversational wanderings seem to have. We could be talking about court cases or stars or something totally unrelated to either of our fields. I don’t think we fit in either of the age old “opposites attract” or “great minds think alike” labels I have heard used to describe married couples. At our best times we are debate partners, philosophers, and advocates, sparking thoughts off of one another with conversations that last for hours.

Many people, after they find out what we each do, ask how we ended up together because “we have nothing in common”. We have a ton in common: a love for one another and a genuine interest in what the other person is doing and what brings them happiness. Stars and criminals are really just fine details.

Whatcha think?
