Briefcase on the Kitchen Table

The musings of a millenial midwestern lawyer and mom.

Cookie Monster

It is an interesting thing, moving in with someone. After so many years together I thought I had seen most of Avery’s belongings, especially since we have helped each other with many moves. So we move in to our apartment and begin the long and always distained task of going through boxes. I was working in the living room as Avery unpacked boxes back in our bedroom. I was actually thinking about how nice it was to have someone to share all of the unpacking with. I finished the few boxes around me and went to see how things were going in the bedroom. I turn the corner and there he is… on the bedside table… Cookie Monster. I was a bit confused. How had this dear childhood character arrived in my bedroom? Ave came back into the room and looks at me staring at the miniature blue addition to our family. “What?” he asks.

“Honey… what is that?”

“Cookie Monster,” (as though I just asked if grass is green).

Apparently he has had it for years; it is on his list of cherished childhood possessions. And I had no idea. It made me wonder; as we begin this grand adventure together that is marriage, how many more Cookie Monsters will I find? Even knowing Ave as well as I feel I know him, how many things will I continue to learn as we begin sharing our lives in entirely new ways. You know what though? I hope in twenty-five years I am still finding Cookie Monsters. I hope we continue to surprise each other and learn from one another. So thank you Cookie Monster, for reminding me that as well as I know my husband, there is always more to learn and discover.

  3. I am sure Avery will learn things about you, too! You have a lifetime together for these experiences.
