Briefcase on the Kitchen Table

The musings of a millenial midwestern lawyer and mom.

The Hills are Alive

A tragedy has taken place and I did not even know it. This definitely fits in one of the aforementioned categories of being with someone for a very long time and missing a key piece of information. This is what we would call a Cookie Monster (confused? Refer to earlier post). My husband of just over three weeks and partner of nearly seven years has never seen the Sound of Music. There…now it is in writing… I cannot be in denial about it any longer. It snuck up, at first looking fairly harmless. I was lying in bed reading, humming “You are sixteen going on seventeen,” and Avery says, “What are you humming?” Thinking maybe he just does not recognize it without the words I begin again, this time with lyrics; “You are sixteen, going on seventeen, innocent as a rose.” Blank stare. Nothing. Nada. So I sing another line or two. Again, nothing. And then it hits me. “It is from the Sound of Music sweetie” (accompanied by a very worried and questioning look). “Oh. Never seen it,” And there it is. My husband has never seen The Sound of Music (come to find out later in the conversation he has never seen Mary Poppins either!).

What transpired after this was a debate of sorts (the kind of which anyone who has spent much time around Ave and I together have seen many of). Why was there this debate? Because as soon as I pointed out the travesty of him not seeing possibly one of the most prolific films ever made, he rebuts quickly with “Well, you have never seen Star Wars.” This is also true. Hence the debate of which one has had a more profound effect on American pop-culture. As it is always when we debate, no winner is declared (although depending on which one of us you ask, you will get very different answers of who obviously won).

Much as it troubles me that “A few of my favorite things” and “Edelweiss” are not second nature to Ave, like all of the other Cookie Monsters, I will learn to love and embrace it; or at the very least accept it. Additionally, it will take some careful strategizing to make sure that the next time ABC Family shows The Sounds of Music on constant rerun for an entire weekend, our television is locked in and ready to go.

  1. In my defense Ave chose not to watch Sound Of Music, I own it and whereas I didn’t watch it often, when I did he always went somewhere else. Mary Poppins on the other hand I don’t own, but when it was on TV & I watched it he went somewhere else. Too much male influence I suppose.

  2. Sounds like youl need to plan a movie weekend asap! I once spent all summer getting through all of the Star Wars with Shea. And Ave could use a good dose of Julie Andrews in his life. But, if come ‘clean the house time’ he begins singing and expecting things to put themselves away, you will have done it to yourself. 😉

You will need to watch Star Wars as well! All six of them 🙂

  4. I think you can do without the newest (though technically ‘first’) three of the Star Wars saga. While they add a good deal of background information, they aren’t very good movies in and of themselves and can just as easily be explained as watched.

I watched most of the Sound of Music, and honestly…not impressed. Mary Poppins was only slightly more interesting.
